Never Adopt Siblings

Many families unknowingly make the mistake of adopting siblings. Siblings are two puppies that come from the same litter and are either brother and sister, sister and sister, or brother and brother. It is often tempting to adopt two puppies in order to give each puppy a playmate when the family is away at work and/or school.

When you adopt a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy or any puppy for that matter you need to only adopt one puppy at a time because during the 10-16 week period you will need to be the primary focus for your new puppy. If your puppy is left with a sibling during this period their canine instincts will kick in and they will attach to their sibling over you which can lead to authority problems later on.

When you adopt a new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy your new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy needs to spend their 10-16 week period with you as their main focus and you need to be able to return that focus to your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy. If you have another dog already in the home you can put your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy in its crate where it can see the other dog, but not interact with the other dog until you can be present to interact as well. Do not miss out on this important bonding process by allowing your new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy to bond with another canine over you.

If you look through my website you might notice that I have kept siblings. I actually have two separate backyards along with enough Cavaliers that I can separate my dogs into two packs within separate yards. I attend separate obedience classes with each of the siblings and even though I will not be able to break their bond completely the fact that I have several other dogs creating a pack atmosphere unlike a family adopting just two puppies, I have a better opportunity at managing the sibling rivalry in the future. It is very common for show breeders to hang on to more than one puppy in order to watch them mature more when deciding which puppy to keep in a litter. This is often why an older puppy will be placed in a pet home later on. Therefore, I felt I needed to clarify my keeping siblings versus a family adopting two siblings as pets.
